Charlie Atkins Motostar Oulton Park May 2018

Goole Racer Charlie Atkins was competing in round two of the Hel Performance British Motostar Standard Class Championship at Oulton Park last weekend. The 15-year-old finished seventh in the first race and fourth in race two. He is now ninth in the championship with 33 points.

Free Practice

The weather was kind on the Friday when the Wilson Racing rider completed two free practice sessions. In FP1 he had to be cautious as he was running in a refreshed engine so lap times were not important. In the second session, Atkins was able to push harder and set the fifth best time in his class, a 1:50.581.

On Sunday the sun continued to shine on the Cheshire circuit as Atkins prepared for qualifying. Atkins worked hard increasing his pace as the 25-minute session went on. Building his speed, he set his fastest time of 1:50.642 on his thirteenth and final lap. Atkins would start 8th in the standard class.

Race One

Atkins didn’t get the best of starts to race one on Sunday afternoon. He then began to put in some solid consistent lap times which enabled him to close the gap on the front-runners. He crossed the finish line in 7th.

Race Two

Because of his lap time in race one, he moved up to fifth on the grid for the second race. He made a superb start moving up to second in the standard class through the first few corners. A couple of mistakes saw him drop back to fifth after a few laps but Atkins dug deep and crossed the finish line in a superb fourth place.

Charlie Atkins said, “The qualifying went OK although to be fair I would like to have been a little higher up. Race one was difficult. I didn’t get away well and was then having to chase the riders ahead and finished seventh. In the second race, I made my best start of the season but made some small mistakes. With such a close group it cost me some places but I managed to get it back together and came home fourth. I must thank Wilson Racing for a great bike and also my sponsors Harman Carpets and Flooring, Fenton Plumbing, The Bell and Crown Snaith and”
