Charlie Atkins returned from a weekend in Scotland with his best result of the season. The Goole youngster was competing in the Hel Performance Motostar British standard class Championship and left with a fourth and fifth place finish.

The Knockhill circuit in Fife is only 1.3 miles long but is a challenging track with its fast blind apex bend known as Duffus Corner and the sometimes changeable weather.

The weekend didn’t start as positively as Atkins hoped. Riding the Wilson Racing Honda NSF250R Moto3 machine in free practice on Friday morning he was seventh quickest but knew where he could make up some of the time he was losing.

Unfortunately, there was light rain in the afternoon free practice session so there was nothing to be gained and Atkins sensibly opted for safety over heroics.

Saturday brought with it warmer weather and the only session of the day for the Moto3 riders, qualifying. Atkins made good use of the twenty minute period as he secured fifth spot in the standard class.

Unusually both races were on the Sunday this time. In race one he was in an exciting battle with another rider for the final podium position for the majority of the race. Whilst he missed out this time and finished fourth it was his best result this season.

In the second race Atkins made a solid start. Unfortunately he was unable to keep up the pace of the group in front and found himself having to fend off another rider in the closing laps to hold on to fifth place. He did so and took home a total of 24 points from the weekend racing.

Charlie Atkins said,” It has been a while since I felt this good on my Moto3. Whilst I’m ninth in the championship this weekend’s results mean I’m only four points behind the sixth place rider and there are still plenty of races to go. As always thank you to Gary and Nikita of Wilson Racing for a superb bike and to my sponsors Harmen Carpets, and The Bell and Crown pub for their continued support.”

The next round is at Snetterton on the 2nd July.
