Charlie Atkins Brands Hatch Indy 2018

Racing at Brands Hatch last weekend, in the Hel Performance British Motostar standard class championship, Charlie Atkins from Goole scored ninth and twelfth place finishes.

Nearly forty riders from the GP and standard class competed at the Kent circuit on the short 1.2 mile Indy track with more than twenty now racing in the standard class.

On Friday there were two free practice sessions. The first started wet but a narrow dry line did begin to emerge later on.  Atkins finished ninth quickest in the tricky conditions. Free practice two was dry and he improved his lap time to 53.146 but this only put him 12th fastest.

The Saturday morning saw bright sunshine for the qualifying session. The times were very close with fractions of a second separating the riders. Atkins set a time of 52.345 which meant only fourteenth on the grid. Just four-tenths of a second away was the rider who qualified tenth.

On Sunday Atkins made a good start from 14th on the grid. He set his fastest lap of the weekend a 51.155 and was in a tough battle with another rider as the race entered the final laps. Atkins crossed the line in ninth to pick up seven championship points.

The second race on Sunday saw Atkins start one place further forward in thirteenth. Atkins started well moving up to tenth by the end of the fourth lap. He then struggled to improve his pace and came under pressure from a group of chasing riders. He missed out on another top ten finish by just a tenth of a second. In the end, he had to settle for 12th.

Charlie Atkins said,” To be fair I struggled all weekend. I have never done particularly well at the Indy track and I wasn’t able to change that this time either. I’m disappointed with the results but we did score points in each race and there is plenty more racing to go this year. I’d like to thank all my sponsors and particularly Harman Carpets and Flooring and Fenton Plumbing.”

Atkins is tenth in the standings after round one with 11 points. The series now moves to Oulton Park over the weekend of the 5 – 7 May 2018.
