Charlie Atkins

After 9 rounds and 18 races of the Hel Performance British Motostar championship Charlie Atkins ended the season ninth overall.

The Goole racer completed the final round on the 2.4 mile Brands Hatch GP circuit. In the first race he crossed the line in seventh position and in treacherous conditions of race two he crossed the line eighth.

Having completed two free practice session on Friday Atkins went out for the 30-minute qualifying session on Saturday morning. As the session was coming to a close he hadn’t set a really fast time but with a huge effort in the closing minutes, he managed to record a 1:38.676 which put him seventh in the standard category for race one.

A poor start hampered Atkins’s race. He lost several positions in the opening lap and had to work his way back through the field. He was then racing in a group but was making little progress until the end of the race when he managed to catch Franco Bourne crossing the line 0.012 seconds in front for seventh position.

Race 2

The weather made a drastic change for Sunday and the track was completely wet. In fact, there was standing water in some parts of the circuit. After a steady start Atkins was caught and passed by a couple of riders in the treacherous conditions. Riders were sliding out of the race on almost every lap. Thinking maturely, Atkins continued lapping at a sensible pace and came across the line in a safe eighth position.

The Hel Performance British Motostar standard class Championship has now finished and Charlie Atkins finished eighth overall with 115 points. He still has the final round of the British Talent Cup to compete in. That event is in Valencia on 16 to 18 November 2018.

Charlie Atkins said,” I didn’t get away well in race one so was fighting to get back from where I started. So in the end seventh was OK. Race two was probably the worst wet weather I have ever ridden in. It was horrible with puddles everywhere. People were flying off all over the place. I just kept calm and focused on getting to the finish line. I’ happy with eighth in those conditions.

This is the end of the Motostar championship for this year. I would like to say a massive thanks to my Uncle Lee, Harman Carpets and Flooring, Craig Fenton Plumbing,, The Bell and Crown in Snaith, Fosters Bakery and Selby Sports Massage and Personal Training.”
